Video of a call with my regular SIM card!
Step by Step iPhone Unlocking

Why unlock your iPhone? :-)
  • Use the iPhone with any SIM card
  • Get all of its functionalities
What you need:
  • An iPhone, of course, and its USB wire!
  • PC with Windows or a Mac (the procedure below is for Windows only)
  • One needle (yes, one only!)
  • A friend to help you
  • A few hours at least ;-)
What you DON'T need:
  • Solder
  • Hexedit files
  • 2 needles
What you risk :-(
  • Break or scratch your iPhone
  • Loose your warranty
  • Being unable to use it with any SIM card anymore...
  • Break the law of your country by unlocking the iPhone
  • Loose your time if the procedure fails
  • ...

Step 1 - Get the Files

The files where gathered from Geohack.rar, iphone-binkit-0.06.tar.gz, SSHkit.zip and maybe other sources, which I found on the web. I also copied some files from one package to the other to reduce the number of operations needed to put the files on the iPhone.

Here is the complete pack in ZIP (14.2MB) and the complete pack in RAR (8.8 MB).

Download the file and extract the whole content in a folder on your desktop.

Step 2 - Phone Backup - Close iTunes

Connect the iPhone
Connect your iPhone to your computer.

Backup the content of the iPhone
Let iTunes sync the iPhone. This is required only if you need to recover your data in case of a crash during the hack.

Close iTunes
If iTunes is running, close it.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to open the Task Manager.
Click on the Process tab, sort processes by name by clicking on Image Name.
If you can find iTunes.exe, select it and click End Process.
If you can find iTunesHelper.exe, select it and click End Process.
(Click Yes when asked if you really want to end the processes)

Step 3 - Prepare iPhone

Jailbreak
Open the folder on your desktop where you have extracted the content of the pack in step 1.
Navigate to SSHkit\SSHKit
Run jailbreak.exe and follow instructions. Wait until the process has completed and the iPhone has rebooted.

Install SSH
Run sshify-windows.bat and wait until it has completed.
Restart your iPhone.

Connect your iPhone to your wireless network
On the iPhone, press the HOME button, then Settings, Wi-Fi.
Connect to your network.

Find your iPhone IP
On the iPhone, press the HOME button, then Settings, Wi-Fi.
Click the blue arrow next to your network's name and write down your IP address (should be like 10.0.0.4 or 192.168.1.5).

Disable Auto-Lock
On the iPhone, press the HOME button, then Settings, General, Auto-Lock.
Select Never.

Install SCP client
Open the folder on your desktop where you have extracted the content of the pack in step 1.
Navigate to WinSCP
Run winscp403setup.exe and follow instructions. When asked, leave the Norton Commander interface type on.

Run SCP client
Launch WinSCP
Put your IP address in Host Name
User Name: root
Password: dottie
File Protocol: SCP
Click Login
Don't click Abort if asked.
If you get an error like "Command groups failed", just click OK and wait.

Upload binkit
In the left panel (local files), navigate to the folder on your desktop where you have extracted the content of the pack in step 1.
Navigate to iphone-binkit-0.06\iphone-binkit. You should see bin, libexec, sbin and other folders.
In the right panel (files on the iPhone), double-click ".." on top of the file list until you reach the root.
Select all the files in the left panel and copy them to the right.

Add rights to binary files
In the right panel (files on the iPhone), double-click bin.
Select all files
Right-click, select Properties
Under Permissions, check all the X (click until you get a tick). Click OK.

Step 4 - Open iPhone

Remove rear panel
Unplug your iPhone and turn it off.
Go to ifixit.com.
Click Begin Installation and follow thouroughly the instructions.
Note that the procedure can take a quite a while and is a bit tricky.
Be careful not to scratch or damage the iPhone.

Remove the metal cover
Remove carefully (with your nail or a thin tool) the clipped metal cover right below the battery.
Its edges can be slightly stuck in a sort of gum, so you might need to force it to unclip somehow.
You iPhone should look like this:

Step 5 - Copy Files to iPhone

Connect iPhone
Connect the iPhone to your computer and turn it on.

Connect with WinSCP
Open WinSCP and connect to the phone like in step 3 (Run SCP client).

Create folder etc
In the right panel (files on the iPhone), double-click ".." on top of the file list until you reach the root.
Open etc and create a folder called etc.
Open the folder you've created (you should be in /etc/etc).

Copy bbupdater and termcap
In the left panel (local files), navigate to the folder on your desktop where you have extracted the content of the pack in step 1.
Open folder Geohack. You should see a few files, including bbupdater and termcap.
Copy these two files to the right (/etc/etc).
Select them in the right panel, click Properties and check all X in Permissions. Click OK.

Step 6 - Change Modem Settings

Open SSH connection with Putty
Navigate to the folder on your desktop where you have extracted the content of the pack in step 1.
Open folder Geohack
Run putty.
Type your iPhone IP address as Host Name and make sure the port is 22 and Connection type is SSH
Click Open and wait until the connection is established.
Type root as login and dottie as password.
Note that commands can be copied from this page and pasted into Putty with a right click.

Unload CommCenter
Type launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist and press ENTER.

Step 7 - Modem Settings

Create Folder
In Putty, type mkdir /usr/local/etc and press ENTER.

Change modem settings
Type minicom -s and press ENTER.
With the down arrow, select Serial port setup and press ENTER.
Type A to change Serial Device.
Type /dev/tty.baseband and press ENTER.
Press Esc.
Select Save setup as dfl and press ENTER.

Test modem connection
Select Exit and press ENTER.
Type AT and press ENTER.
The modem should answer OK.

Exit Minicom
Press Ctrl-A, then press X to exit Minicom.

bbupdater
Type bbupdater -v and press ENTER.

Test modem connection
Type minicom and press ENTER.
Type AT and press ENTER.
The modem should answer OK.

Exit Minicom
Type Ctrl-A, then press X to exit Minicom.

Step 8 - Needle

Run ieraser
Type cd /usr/bin and press ENTER.
Type ieraser and press ENTER.

Prepare iunlocker
In Putty, type iunlocker, but don't press ENTER.

Prepare short circuit
The next operation requires that you short circuit two points on the iPhone.
I suggest using a needle, partially forced into an electric wire:

Find place for short circuit

Place the needle
The goal is to short circuit the 2 points shown with a circle on the close up above.
Put the tip of the needle on point A. The circuit has a thin isolating cover, which you must pierce to get a contact with the underlying metal.
Without loosing contact with point A, touch point B with the needle.

Run iunlocker
In Putty, iunlocker should be typed. Just press ENTER to run it.
iunlocker will tell you if the two points are not in contact.
Numbers will be displayed on the screen. Wait until the process has completed (2E3F00). It takes a few minutes.

bbupdater
Type bbupdater -v and press ENTER.

Minicom
(Note that in minicom, you must type commands without erasing mistakes. That is, you can type AT+CLCL, erase the last L and type a K insteak, but it WON'T work. If you make a mistake, type Ctrl-A, then X to exit and start again.)
Type minicom and press ENTER.
Type AT+CLCK="PN",0,"00000000" (8 zeroes) and press ENTER
Type AT+CLCK="PN",2 and press ENTER
You should get a 0 as a result.
Type Ctrl-A, then X to exit minicom.

Your iPhone is unlocked
Your iPhone should now be ready to accept any SIM card!

Step 9 - Activation

Activate your iPhone
After putting another SIM card, go to https://ookoo.org/iphone/iasign.php and follow instructions. This step is needed, because activation is SIM card dependent.

WELL DONE!

This guide is awesome, but you never say when to remove the needle. whe do we remove it exactly?

Great instructions! Has anyone tried this yet?

Adrian - from reading other methods out there, it would seem that the needle should be removed after "the process has completed (2E3F00)". Some other sites also recommend (after removing the needle) typing A and then hitting enter to get a dump screen before the "Type bbupdater -v and press ENTER" step.

Does anyone know if the 'typing A and then hitting enter' step is necessary? From the looks of this guide, it seems it isn't...

I may also give this a try this weekend, after I do a line-by-line comparison between this and the Hackint0sh 2-needle version to sort out any discrepencies... if this works, I'll definitely buy an EdiTunes license to thank the author!

James (and many others!), you can now submit comments in Firefox too, like I am currently doing to write my replies. :-)

Adrian, I tried to keep the contact with the needle until iunlocker stopped, but I think it is not necessary.

James, I for sure did not press A to get a dump, and could nevertheless unlock the phone.

propwash, I went through the whole process with a phone that had been activated with its original SIM card. I, at least, had to reactivate it with the new one. Look at the iActivate page, activation requires the ICCID, which is the Integrated Circuit Card ID (SIM Serial Number, specific to a SIM card). That means that each time you change the SIM card you need to reactivate the phone. I'll change the text of step 9 to make it clear!

To all: I might have forgotten to mention a detail or two. Don't hesitate to let me know!

Good luck, and tell me how it went with your iPhones! :-)

Excelent work. Congrats... By the way, I've heard somewhere that we have to delete termcap after the hack so bluetooth will work again. Is this true?

Hello question, didn´t you forget the last step which was to load CommCenter, should this be added to the step after getting a "0" as a result

Now for the final step type the following command in putty
launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist

Hello all.
I have tried this method and I'm stuck at the step 7. When I try to run minicom with the "minicom -s" command, it returns "No termcap database present!" error. Can someone tell me what the problem is?!

Hello, I have a problem on step 7. The "mkdir /usr/local/etc " command does not work it gave me the folowing error "mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/local/etc': No such file or directory" and minicom give the folowing 2 errors "minicom: WARNING: configuration file not found, using default" ; "No termcap database present!" and exits.
Please help me to solve thise problem.

Thank you.

Naim - if you're getting that message (no termcap database present), it means that you need to put the termcap file in /etc (or in /usr/local/etc ). Then you need to make sure that the file has read permission (check with winscp, putty or mobile terminal).

(Note, I havn't actually attempted an iphone unlock yet myself - still waiting for my tools to arrive - but this info is based on reading about the various problems people are having).

Octav - strange behaviour of your mkdir - do you have a /usr and then the /local subdirectory already? You could try migrating there and then making the etc directory under the local directory yourself...

Regarding the 'no termcap database present', see my above note to Naim...

In response to "Carlos, I did not load CommCenter with this command at the end of the procedure (but I unloaded it in a previous step)."
Exactly, I know you unloaded the CommCenter in step 6, BUT, Aren't you supposed to load the CommCenter at the end after step 8? All other tutorials I´ve seen have this step included, I think you should add this to the tutorial.

Saturday 01st of September 2007 08:04:51 PM
Has anyone tried this?

Any luck here? Also, can this '1 needle' method be used with the Cracker method from Hackintosh? I would belive so as it is just amore intelligent way to short circuit?
Thanks

Well... I officially have an ibrick now. Followed the instructions to a 'T' - I don't think it's the instructions fault. I got all the way down to a successful iunlock. But bbupdater - v kept giving me no response, and when I tried to reload the iphone, I now get the dreaded 1011 itunes error (see hackint0sh threads). In retrospect, I think I should have used a better magnifying glass (I had only 4x) - it's important not to nick the other thread, or to go too deep (and wide) and cut off the thread... ugh. Regret trying now. Good luck to the rest of you...

JJ, no, you dont't need the secpack, nor to NOR steps.

Carlos, as I said, I did NOT reload CommCenter. It was most probably reloaded when I restarted the phone.

Michael, you're right. I did not make anything intelligent, but gathering all the needed files in a unique archive, using a single needle instead of two or soldering, and I wrote this tutorial. :-)

Jamal, have you found anybody? Be aware that probably nobody will agree to unlock your phone unless you take the risk to have it broken forever...

dminal, I could unlock the iPhone, but I wrote the tutoral afterwards. It might of course contain errors, but at least nybern could unlock it following my instructions (he posted while I was writing my replies!!)

Hole, I'm really sorry for your phone... I found something on http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_how_to_hardware_unlock_mac_faq.html that might be of interest to you:

"Many people are getting error codes like 1011 and a message saying the iPhone can't be restored. One solution that seems to work for many (who otherwise think their iPhone is bricked) is to plug in the iPhone to the wall charger and let it fully charge. Then, while leaving it in the dock, plug the cable into the computer and restore it via iTunes. You can also force the iPhone into restore mode by pressing and holding "Home" and the sleep/wake button for 25 seconds, while in the dock. Like anything, try several times to get this to work. If you absolutely can not get into restore mode you probably have an iBrick. There is a bit of discussion on this here.

Until a better solution arrives, you may to have Apple service your iPhone. You most likely damaged a component when removing the back casing."

Hole, Degsie and Otacon91, I didn't have this problem, nor could I find a fix of this problem on the web. Did you follow all the previous steps thoroughly?

Joe, I had this problem the first time I tried to unlock the phone... I restored the phone from iTunes and restarted everything from the beginning, successfully till the end.

Sean, Are you sure you didn't delete the CommCenter file? This is what is recommended on some sites, but you can just unload it, as explained in this tutorial.

I'm trying to see if Putty works with Vista, since it looks like it is required (unless someone can direct me to a working alternative that can do the same thing Putty does)
As far as functions go, your iPhone will work 100% fine, except for visual voice mail (being able to see, as well as pick and choose which message to listen to) it will just be normal voice mail. If you do this, it will be a full unlock to use any GSM Sim card in your phone. Bluetooth will be fine, but remember the iPhone doesn't allow you to listen to music over bluetooth.

T-Zones is just a service which allows you to get games and stuff, It is not access to the Edge network. You would need to get a plan similiar to what say, an MDA or a WING would get, Which is unlimited Data which costs $40 a month. I had it for my MDA.

Well when I had my T-mobile MDA I had to pay $40 a month for unlimited data (This applied to using 3g to browse the net as much as I wanted, as well as send emails). Now I forget if the NAME of the service was called "T-Zones" since I know thats whats shown when you try to do anything online from your phone.

*Now, as for the Jailbreak thing, are you guys using iBricker? This program not only jailbreaks your phone, it also allows you to download apps for your iPhone instantly, and is needed to get certain programs to allow the iPhone to be hacked. Do a fresh restore of your iPhone, LEAVE all the Apple apps on, scept for iTunes, and then proceed to use iBreaker, because if you try to use it without the service that lets your PC "see" your iPhone, iBricker wont work.

I'm a European user and have just bought an iPhone in the US. I'd like to perform the unlock, but it seems that this procedure assumes that I would have already activated the iPhone with an ATT account. Have I understood this correctly? Is there a way to do an out-of-the-box unlock without having activated with ATT? Thx!

One question: why is it necessary to have wi-fi on? I don't have access to any wi-fi connection, am I not able to hardware unlock my iphone? Or is there another way to get the iphone's ip address?
Thank you very much,
by the way, this is the easiest and most comprehensive guide I have seen for hw unlock.
John.

John - Yes you need to have a wi-fi connection. All the connects are IP based from the phones wi-fi connection

In reading back through the posts in regard to needing to activating with ATT first, it seemed that there were several open questions (inlcuding mine). Some research revealed that there is a piece of software which opens the iPhone up for further work (such as this unlock hack) without needing to subscribe with ATT. Try looking at http://www.dvdtoiphone.net/unlock-iphone.html . Note that you will need to have iTunes 7.0.3.54 installed (not earlier, not later), and there is a link to download the installer for that version on this site. If, like me, you had already installed a later version, I would suggest that you uninstall it first. Also, make sure you delete any iTunes library files you may have created with a more recent version of iTunes, as this will prevent the process from working correctly (it's an .itl file under the Windows "My Music" directory). Note that just to be safe (not sure if it had an effect) I also deleted the XML file iTunes had created. Also, the post from Sean above from 7 September in regard to the \phonedmg directory (and files contained therein) was extremely helpful to me in getting past many of the jailbreak issues. I've gotten up to the stage just before cracking open the case, waiting for some tools to be delivered before I try that one. Thanks to all who have posted, above all Editunes!

A few problems:
1. to do jailbreak,
u need iphone restore firmware
2. You do need secpack
3. You do need nor
4. It's better to upgrade iPhone to 1.02 first

BK - Put the termcap file in the root/etc dir and it will find it from there.

I cannot find termcap anywhere and I never copied it. Is there any other file that probably is doing the same job and was copied that is preventing my bluetooth to work?
Thanks,
JB

If you have termcap is probably located in the /etc folder. You need to SSH into the phone and delete it. After SSH just do the following:

cd /etc
rm termcap

Some people are reporting issues with the Bluetooth and they don't have termcap. Does anybody know which other file could be causing this issue?

If you don't have termcap, your bluetooth does not work and you do not have "minicom" file in etc folder; Drop "minicom" file in etc folder. File can be downloaded from link below.
